Uma Thurman Proud to Watch ‘Talented’ Actor Children Surpass Her

Uma Thurman is the matriarch of a starry family. With her ex-husband Ethan Hawke, Thurman shares two children who are finding significant success in the film and television spheres. Maya Hawke has gained recognition for her roles in “Stranger Things,” “Asteroid City,” and “Wildcat,” in addition to releasing three albums as a singer/songwriter. Levon Hawke also appeared in “Wildcat,” as well as “Blink Twice,” “The Thickett,” and “The Crowded Room.” Both have recently dipped their toes in off-Broadway shows — Maya in “Eurydice” and Levon in “Ghosts.”

Thurman told Seth Meyers on June 24 that she is so proud of her children (which also includes 12-year-old Luna), and that she is enjoying watching them ascend to the top echelons of the industry that made her famous.

“As a mother, you know, honestly, I’m so proud of them and they’re so together, and honestly, seeing your kids kind of surpass you is awesome,” she said (via People). Meyers said that he wouldn’t describe them as having “surpassed” her, but Thurman said that she thought “they’re amazing.”

“I think they’re so talented. And so you’re always anxious that the circumstances all support the best outcome. The only thing that makes me nervous is I want them to have the best circumstances,” she explained.

Thurman herself has been busy recently. Starting July 11, she will co-star in the revival of “Dexter” on Paramount+ with Showtime, and on July 2, Netflix will drop “The Old Guard 2,” in which the star returns to the action genre that buoyed her career with the “Kill Bill” films. Thurman told Jimmy Fallon on June 17 that she didn’t have any training when she stepped into her “Old Guard” role.

“Oh, if only I could have trained,” she said. “No, I came on to do it kind of at the end. So I had no training. I was like, ‘Oh, yeah, a sword. I think I hold it like this.’” She added that co-star Charlize Theron was a big reason why she signed on for the film. “This one seemed different [from other action movies she was offered] because in ‘Old Guard 1’ — Charlize was just so epic in it. And so I thought, ‘Well, I could go do this for her in that. Where she’s kind of taking the genre there. I’ll go support her and fight her and battle her out.’”
