“The world is a gladiatorial arena… A worthy opponent is hard to find.” Enter: Bautista. 💥 Inaugural Ent. has revealed the official trailer for a sci-fi action comedy called Afterburn, arriving sometime later this year. The film follows a treasure hunter who goes to Europe to find the Mona Lisa after a solar flare ruined the Earth’s eastern hemisphere. Original development on this project began in 2018, halted and restarted again in 2024. Following Danny Boyle’s Sunshine and Charlotte Wells’ Aftersun, now it’s time for Afterburn. After a massive solar flare destroys the Earth’s eastern hemisphere, an emboldened treasure hunter for hire adventures into Europe to uncover the coveted Mona Lisa and other artifacts, only to learn the world needs a hero more than it needs a painting. Starring Dave Bautista as Jake, Samuel L. Jackson as Valentine, Olga Kurylenko as Drea, with Kristofer Hivju, Eden Epstein, and Daniel Bernhardt. This looks like a stunt show extravaganza with endless violent action, but also with one of the dumbest scripts ever written. Every single line is cringe. Oy… I wish action movies still cared about the writing as much as the explosions.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for J.J. Perry’s action thriller Afterburn, direct from YouTube:
“The apocalypse isn’t for everybody.” A decade after the Earth’s technology is decimated by a solar flare. Set against the backdrop of a post-apocalyptic Earth whose entire Eastern Hemisphere was destroyed by a massive solar flare, leaving what life remains mutated from radiation and fallout. The story revolves around a group of treasure hunters who extract such objects as the Mona Lisa, the Rosetta Stone and the Crown Jewels while facing rival hunters, mutants and pirates. Afterburn is directed by stuntman turned filmmaker J.J. Perry, director of the films Day Shift and The Killer’s Game previously; plus lots of work as a second unit director and stunt coordinator / stuntman on many big Hollywood features (Beowulf, Edge of Darkness, Get the Gringo, Gangster Squad, Ender’s Game, John Wick, F9). The screenplay is written by Nimród Antal & Matt Johnson; adapted from the comic book “Afterburn” by Scott Chitwood & Paul Ens. Produced by Toby Jaffe, Neal H. Moritz, Steve Richards, Dave Bautista. Inaugural Entertainment will debut J.J. Perry’s Afterburn movie in theaters sometime later in 2025 – stay tuned for the exact date. Look good?
