‘Fingers Crossed It Happens This Time’ – Anurag Basu on Long-Delayed Kishore Kumar Film Amid Aamir Khan Rumours

After a decade of development hurdles, filmmaker Anurag Basu has once again sparked excitement over his long-in-the-works Kishore Kumar biopic. While rumours swirl about Aamir Khan being attached to the project, Basu is treading carefully, choosing not to confirm or deny anything until it’s official.

The Long Road to the Kishore Kumar Project

Basu’s passion project has faced numerous roadblocks over the years, from securing family rights to finalising casting, first Ranbir Kapoor, more recently Aamir Khan. Speaking to Mid‑Day, Basu remained cautious yet hopeful: “No comment… Until everything is finalised and the contract is signed, I don’t think I should speak on it.”

He added with measured optimism, “This project went through a lot of ups and downs. So, I’m keeping my fingers crossed that it happens this time and I go on set with the story, which I’ve been trying to tell for the last decade. So, I won’t jinx it by speaking about it.”

Trade reports earlier this year suggested that Basu and Khan have met several times, with Bhushan Kumar producing, involving discussions that have been ongoing since late 2024, though no contracts have been signed yet.

Ask Kishore’s son, singer Amit Kumar, on whether he is aware about Aamir being approached for the role, and he says, “Nothing is finalised. As per our legal team’s order we can’t mention any developments.”

Reunion with Ranbir Kapoor Still on the Table

While Aamir remains in talks, Basu hasn’t ruled out working again with Ranbir Kapoor, the actor who previously starred in Basu’s acclaimed films Barfi! (2012) and Jagga Jasoos (2017). On the idea of reuniting, Basu shared, “I hope it happens soon. Woh aadat bohot kharab kar deta hai [he spoils you a lot]. We keep talking about working together again.” He even teased a personal connection, recalling a gift mishap: “He has gifted me a pair of shoes again. Pehli baar galat size bheje thhe,” he laughed.

What Lies Ahead

With key pieces like lead actor confirmation still pending, the biopic isn’t official yet. But Basu’s public optimism and recent buzz suggest this long-stalled project may finally be picking up pace. For fans of Kishore Kumar’s timeless legacy, this biopic could offer a deeply personal and musical tribute from a director who has remained faithful to the story for over a decade.
