Rajkummar Rao Officially Confirms Portraying Sourav Ganguly in His Biopic, Says “I’m Nervous… It’s a Huge Responsibility”

Actor Rajkummar Rao has finally put an end to months of speculation by officially confirming that he will play former Indian cricket captain Sourav Ganguly in the upcoming biopic. In a recent conversation with NDTV, Rao said, “Now that Dada has already said it, let me also make it official — yes, I am playing him in his biopic.” He added, “I am nervous… It’s a huge responsibility, but it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Casting speculation ends with Ganguly’s public endorsement

Speculations around the casting had been circulating for a while, with names like Ranbir Kapoor and Ayushmann Khurrana reportedly in consideration. However, it was Ganguly himself who gave a strong hint about Rao’s selection in a recent PTI interview, stating, “I think the right person is doing it… I’ll help him with everything.” Rao’s confirmation has now made it official.

Ganguly shares timeline for shoot and release

Ganguly also offered an update on the film’s production timeline. “It’s going well. It will be released next December. Shooting starts in January. The pre-production, story writing, and scripting take a lot of time. Shooting doesn’t take that much time — it’s about three months — and then the post-production takes time,” he told PTI.

This indicates that filming will commence in January 2026, with a theatrical release targeted for December 2026.

Rao prepping for the part, learning Bengali

Rao, known for his immersive performances, is reportedly preparing extensively for the role. Apart from physical preparation and studying Ganguly’s mannerisms, the actor has also been learning Bengali to add authenticity to the character. He is expected to portray the legendary cricketer across key phases of his life and career.

Project details still under wraps

While the lead actor, production schedule, and release plan are now confirmed, other details—such as the film’s title, director, and supporting cast—have not yet been revealed. The biopic is expected to trace Ganguly’s journey from his early days in Kolkata to becoming one of India’s most celebrated cricket captains.

Rao’s packed year continues

This announcement follows a busy year for Rajkummar Rao. His recent film Bhool Chuk Maaf released on OTT after a short theatrical window in May, and his next theatrical release Maalik is scheduled for July 11, 2025. The Ganguly biopic adds another ambitious project to his growing list of performance-driven roles.
