After years of meticulous planning and heartfelt ambition, Bollywood stalwart Aamir Khan is gearing up to commence production on his dream project, Mahabharat, this August. Known for his unwavering dedication to cinematic excellence, Khan revealed in a recent interview that he will helm this ambitious epic without casting any established stars, opting instead for fresh or lesser-known talent.
Mahabharat: Work starts in August
Aamir has long spoken about the story of Mahabharata as his lifetime goal. He believes that telling this culturally monumental tale demands the utmost care and depth. He explained that delays were due to his determination to handle the narrative respectfully and thoughtfully, aware that a single misstep could hurt sentiments.
In April and May, Aamir hinted at embarking on this project after completing the release of Sitaare Zameen Par. Speaking with various media outlets, he even hinted that Mahabharat might mark his final cinematic endeavour. In his own words: “Once I’ve done it, I might feel there’s nothing more I can do after that”.
After the film’s release now, he recently confirmed starting the film in August, in an interview with Screen,
“Well, I’m starting work on it in the month of August. It will be a series of films. It’ll be back to back. Because you can’t tell the Mahabharat in just one film. And you know, the Mahabharat is very dangerous. It’s again a story which is in my blood. No one can do anything about it. I need to tell it. So I’m starting work on it.”
New talent in Mahabharat, confirms Aamir Khan
One of the most intriguing revelations from Khan’s statement is the decision to build the cast from scratch. He said he has no intention of involving any known actors in the project, reflecting his desire to let fresh faces shape the epic’s vast ensemble. This bold approach could pave the way for new talent to emerge on the grand stage of Indian cinema.

On casting:
“I don’t plan to take any known faces in the film. For me, the characters are the stars. I want unknown faces. There’ll be entirely new cast for it, is what I’m thinking.” – Aamir Khan
“The character of Krishna inspires me — that’s the character I truly love.” – Aamir Khan
The actor’s admiration for Lord Krishna was also noted in earlier conversations, where he expressed deep interest in the character and even hinted at potentially portraying the role himself.
“Actually… mujhe Krishna ka kirdaar bohot hi prabhavit karta hai… I’m very inspired by him. So that’s a character I really love. Actually… I find the character of Krishna deeply impactful… I’m very inspired by him. So that’s a character I really love.” – Aamir Khan (India@2047 Summit, via ABP Live)
Shaping a cinematic universe
Aamir has emphasised that Mahabharat cannot be captured in a single film. Drawing inspiration from Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings, he indicated plans for multiple films, potentially directed by different filmmakers to encompass the epic’s breadth and complexity.
“Kyunki yeh bohot bada project hai, toh main kuch badi cheezein bolna nahi cha raha hoon.” (Since this is such a big project, I don’t want to say anything major right now.), Aamir Khan added further.
If all goes according to plan, the epic series could redefine Indian mythological filmmaking and potentially serve as Khan’s final on-screen legacy.
