Cinespia has unveiled in August lineup for its annual summer screening series at Hollywood Forever Cemetery. In a year that has seen consistently sold-out showings of movies like “Clueless,” “Blue Velvet,” and “Showgirls,” among other classics, the Los Angeles cinematic touchstone will bring more all-time and cult favorites ranging from the ’60s to ’00s.
The fun starts with “Point Break” — which recently received a new 4K restoration last year — on August 2, the 1991 adrenaline rush stars Keanu Reeves as an FBI agent undercover and Patrick Swayze as a zen outlaw. Then, on August 9, enjoy a “Full Moon Slumber Party” at L.A.’s starriest cemetery with a double feature of two creepy flicks, starting with 1987’s “The Lost Boys” and concluding with “An American Werewolf in London,” the terrifying 1981 chiller.
On August 16, give Cinespia your best Blue Steel and join Ben Stiller on the runway in 2001’s “Zoolander.” Then dial it back to 1960 and the granddaddy of all slasher movies, Alfred Hitchcock’s “Psycho,” screening on August 23 — maybe even bring Mother along.
“We’ve lined up a month of unforgettable stories that have stood the test of time,” said Cinespia founder John Wyatt in a statement. “These films aren’t just fan favorites, but cultural touchstones meant to be shared and celebrated amid fellow fans under an open night sky.”
Earlier this month, Wyatt spoke to IndieWire about the special meaning Cinespia — a 24-year-old local institution — has taken on in the wake of the devastating January L.A. fires.
“I think we who are Angelinos, feel a possession, a territorial nature towards our business, and when we play these movies, many of which shot a lot in L.A., it feels like they’re ours. And this is our thing,” Wyatt said.
Wyatt went on to explain that he grew up in the Pacific Palisades, one of the hardest hit communities from the disaster, and that his entire neighborhood — including his mother’s home — was gone.
“My mom is still without a house right now,” he said. “I just felt like everyone really needed to come together, and they wanted to come together at Cinespia, because that’s where we watch our favorite movies in Los Angeles.”
