Could Lena Dunham bring “Girls” into the 2020s? The series creator and recent “Too Much” showrunner told Variety that she is still open to the possibility of revisiting the beloved HBO show. “Girls” concluded in 2017 after six seasons, and starred Dunham, Allison Williams, Jemima Kirke, and Zosia Mamet as a millennial friend group in Brooklyn.
While Dunham has teased a possible “Girls” reboot down the line for years and has been in talks with HBO about bringing the show back (she said in January 2022 for the show’s 10-year anniversary that it was “not time yet,” though), she is now detailing what that revival would entail.
“If we had something to say that was really specific and it was a moment in their lives where we felt like revisiting it — like millennial women becoming mothers or stepping into menopause or going to live at old-age homes — I would always want to work with those people again,” Dunham said.
And Dunham has a few ideas about where the beloved characters would be specifically…
“Shoshanna [(Mamet)] was married to, then divorced from, the mayor of New York City, and she runs an athleisure startup that’s zero-waste,” Dunham said. “Marnie [(Williams)] — it’s third marriage. She still sings, but I think Marnie really needs to take it to sex and love addicts anonymous. Jessa [(Kirke)] is unvaccinated and lives on a boat in Croatia. Adam [(Adam Driver)] is a cult theater actor, and he’s probably living in Berlin, and Ray is still on city council and running his coffee shop and doing better than anyone. Elijah [(Andrew Rannells)] is the fourth lead on a sitcom, making a good amount of money and still looking for love in all the wrong places.”
As for Dunham’s own character Hannah, she added, “Oh my God, I forgot about her! She teaches at Bard and loves raising her son. She probably has a girlfriend who’s, like, a chef. And she’s less obsessed with being famous. That is where I feel that she would land.”
Before Dunham could possibly revisit “Girls,” though, the filmmaker has quite a few other projects in the works: Aside from launching Netflix series “Too Much,” she is also partnering with the streamer for feature “Good Sex” which stars Natalie Portman, Tramell Tillman, Meg Ryan, Mark Ruffalo, Rashida Jones, and Tucker Pillsbury. Dunham is also writing the “10 Things I Hate About You” musical adaptation.
