Madhur Bhandarkar Kickstarts Filming of ‘The Wives’, Promises a Bold Peek Into Bollywood’s Inner Circles

Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar, celebrated for his unflinching portrayal of society’s underbelly in titles like Chandni Bar, Fashion and Heroine, has officially commenced filming his much-anticipated new venture, The Wives, in Mumbai today.

Bold New Chapter in Bollywood Wife Chronicles

Announced earlier this year, The Wives features an ensemble cast led by Sonali Kulkarni, Mouni Roy, Regina Cassandra, Rahul Bhatt, Saurabh Sachdeva, Arjan Bajwa and Freddy Daruwala.

Madhur Bhandarkar shared, “With The Wives, I want to peel back yet another glamorous layer of society and show what really lies beneath.”

Bhandarkar says the film be a bold and unapologetic look at the “secrets, struggles and resilience of women who are often seen but seldom heard,” marking a departure into the complex world of star spouses living behind the glitter of Bollywood’s limelight.

Known for peeling back glamorous facades and revealing harsh truths, Bhandarkar’s body of work includes Page 3, Traffic Signal, Babli Bouncer, and the recent straight-to-OTT India Lockdown. Now, he turns his lens to the personal and social dynamics of Bollywood wives who navigate luxury, public scrutiny and hidden turmoil.

A Follow-Up to India Lockdown, Another Edge-of-Truth Project

Produced jointly by Bhandarkar Entertainment and P J Motion Pictures, The Wives reunites Bhandarkar with producer Pranav Jain after their successful collaboration on India Lockdown. Jain expressed optimism, stating, “Collaborating with Madhur sir again is truly exciting. He has a rare gift for telling stories that make people sit up and think. The Wives will be an eye‑opener and I’m proud to be backing a project that’s so honest and relevant.”

What to Expect from Madhur the Storyteller

Bhandarkar, a National Award and Padma Shri honoree, continues his trademark style of rigorous research and uncompromising realism. Previously, he voiced concerns over how Wives of Bollywood would be received by the industry, describing it as “gritty and hard‑hitting… inspired by real Bollywood wives”.

With meticulous detail and thought-provoking narratives, his films have consistently spotlighted societal blind spots, from bar dancers and film journalists to fashion models and media attention in Chandni Bar, Page 3, Fashion and Heroine. The Wives appears to be the latest addition in this explorative saga, aiming to expose the layers of privilege and pressure that envelop Bollywood’s elite families.

As filming begins in the bustling streets of Mumbai, audiences can anticipate another chapter in Bhandarkar’s cinematic exposé, one that promises to reveal the untold stories of fame by spotlighting the untold battles behind the gloss.
