“Doctors encouraged me to pull the plug.” Multitude Films has revealed an official trailer for Life After, an excellent documentary film made by Reid Davenport as his second doc feature following I Didn’t See You There. This time he takes on a tricky topic and handles it gracefully. Life After is a gripping investigative film that exposes the tangled web of moral dilemmas and profit motives surrounding assisted dying and the legal “right to die”. Davenport uncovers shocking abuses of power while amplifying all the voices of the disability community fighting for justice and dignity in an unfolding matter of life and death. Back in 1983, disabled Elizabeth Bouvia sought right to die, sparking national debate. After legal battles, she vanished. Disabled director Reid Davenport explores her fate & story’s relevance today. I wrote in my positive review from the 2025 Sundance Film Festival that this film is remarkably fascinating. “He wants us to have a real discussion.” And he brings in so many people that each have interesting takes. It’s such a remarkable film that I will highly recommend to anyone who wants to engage in this kind of conversation. Take a look below.
Here’s the official trailer (+ poster) for Reid Davenport’s doc film Life After, direct from YouTube:
In 1983, a disabled Californian woman named Elizabeth Bouvia sought the “right to die,” igniting a national debate about autonomy and the value of disabled lives. After years of courtroom battles, Bouvia vanished from public view. Sundance-winner Davenport embarks on a personal investigation to find out what really happened to Bouvia and reveal why her story is disturbingly relevant today. Life After brings together the many missing voices of the disability community in the ongoing debate about assisted dying, uncovering chilling stories of disabled people dying prematurely. Reid Davenport exposes the intersection of systemic failures and personal autonomy, challenging the idea that assisted dying always represents a free choice, when it can sometimes be seen as the only option. Life After is directed by indie filmmaker Reid Davenport, making his second feature film after directing I Didn’t See You There (2022) previously, plus many other shorts. It’s produced by Colleen Cassingham. This initially premiered at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival earlier this year (read our review). Multitude Films will debut Reid Davenport’s Life After doc in select US theaters starting on July 18th, 2025 this summer. For more details visit the film’s official site.
